Albemarle native Kellie Pickler is famously blonde, but the country star is now nearly bald. She and childhood friend Summer Holt Miller, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in June, both buzzed their long blonde locks Tuesday in Nashville to raise awareness about breast cancer screenings and early detection.
Miller was 36 when she was diagnosed. The pair appeared on "Good Morning America" to share their story.
"If this compels even one person to change their mentality toward waiting until the age of 40 for their mammogram, then it will be worth it," said Miller, who underwent a double mastectomy and begins chemotherapy Thursday.
A video of the shearing (and sharing) will appear on www.athenawater.com. The company is making a monetary donation to the American Cancer Society in Miller's honor.
